March for People’s Park, Friday, April 19, 5 PM – 7 PM

Starts at Willard Park, ends at Sproul Plaza.

Friday marches will continue April 26 and May 3. The march on May 3 will
be in Commemoration of Bloody Thursday.

Come out and join the Berkeley community in a march advocating for
People’s Park to remain a green space! Show your support as we declare
to the UC Regents that People’s Park is a cornerstone of Berkeley’s
countercultural legacy and values.

The march will begin at Willard Park, and end at Sproul Plaza.
Accessibility accommodations (vehicular transport) can be available upon
contact (email info [at] peoplespark.org).

Reducing any piece of People’s Park is in direct violation of Berkeley’s
Measure L, passed in 1986, which requires the Berkeley City Council to
preserve and maintain the public parks and open space which exist in
Berkeley, as well as to acquire and maintain public parks and open space
in the census tracts and neighborhoods of Berkeley having less than the
minimum amount of open space relative to population (2 acres per 1,000).
Rather than reduce People’s Park, we need to increase parks and open
space in this high density area, and we call on the University to
cooperate and facilitate such expansion. Measure L noted “there exists a
clear and present emergency in that the threatened loss of open space,
parks and recreational opportunities in the neighborhoods in Berkeley
will cause irreparable damage to the health and welfare of Berkeley
residents.” This has escalated dramatically over the past 35 years,
especially in light of the global climate crisis.

We also call on the University to honor the recognition of People’s Park
as a nationally significant site, included on the National Register of
Historic Places. Every effort needs to be made to insure it continues as
an open space for world citizens to congregate, share thoughts, music,
poetry, art and inspirations, celebrate free speech and community, offer
mutual aid, and plant and nurture seeds, as we have done for over 50
years.

This protest unifies us in our plea against the commercialization of our
park and demands that UC Berkeley opt for alternate locations for
development, such as the numerous parking lots and vacant buildings that
UC itself documented as potential sites for student housing – or perhaps
the vacant chancellor’s mansion! People’s Park stands as a beacon of
community empowerment, environmental stewardship, and social justice. To
fight climate chaos, we need all the green space we can find.

The march is a declaration against the militarization of our shared
spaces, supporting peace and the rematriation of Ohlone land. We
denounce UC’s financial motives and call for investments that truly
enrich our community. We urge the Regents to acknowledge the cultural
and environmental importance of the park, returning it to the community
that maintains it.

Supreme Court of California hears arguments on People’s Park CEQA case April 3, 2024

The Supreme Court of California will hear the Oral Arguments in our People’s Park CEQA case in Los Angeles on April 3, 2024 at 9 am. The attorneys will make points and respond to questions posed by the justices.

An important area of discussion is how the new CEQA regulations (21085 and 21085.2) created by AB 1307 affect the decision of the Court of Appeals (COA) that the Supreme Court is reviewing. For one example, 21085.2 can be seen as making the return of the EIR for Housing Project #2 at People’s Park back to the trial court, as the COA has ruled, a moot point. On another point it could be argued that the criteria for enactment of 20185.2 was not met and the COA decision is still enforceable. The issues in the case are quite complex due to AB 1307.

See the People’s Park Documents archive for information on the case.

Friday Marches for People’s Park:
Save Open Space! Free the People! Free the Land!

FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2024, from 5 PM to 7 PM

Location: The march begins at Willard Park and progresses along Telegraph Avenue to Sproul Plaza

Bring instruments, signs and please help us with chants and speeches! We need EVERYONE!

We call for the liberation of People’s Park, a cornerstone of Berkeley’s countercultural legacy and values. Reducing any piece of People’s Park is in direct violation of Berkeley’s Measure L, passed in 1986, which requires the Berkeley City Council to preserve and maintain the public parks and open space which exist in Berkeley, as well as to acquire and maintain public parks and open space in the census tracts and neighborhoods of Berkeley having less than the minimum amount of open space relative to population (2 acres per 1,000). People’s Park stands as a beacon of community empowerment, environmental stewardship, and social justice.

UC Berkeley Charter Day
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 2024, 10AM – 2PM
(Chancellor Carol Christ is expected to speak NOON – 1PM)
Sproul Plaza, UC Berkeley campus

UC Berkeley will be celebrating its 156th Birthday, and included this
comment in its announcement: https://light.berkeley.edu/o/charter-day-2024/
“Land sold through the Morrill Act of 1862 to fund the University of California was expropriated from Native Nations. The Morrill Act is intricately tied to California’s unique history of Native dispossession and genocide. UC continues to benefit from this wealth accumulation today. Without acknowledging past and ongoing injustices, we cannot fully live up to our mission.”

Sounds like an invitation to come acknowledge some of those ongoing injustices we’ve been experiencing at the hands of the university!

‘What’s Goin’ On?’: A Teach-In On People’s Park
7–9 pm, Monday, February 26, 2024

Moderator:

  • Kristin Hanson, Professor of English, UC Berkeley

People’s Park is currently barricaded by stacked shipping containers topped with razor wire and guarded round-the-clock, following a midnight raid in early January by combined police forces from UC, CSU, Alameda County, San Francisco City and County and the California State Highway Patrol, organized by the UC Berkeley administration. Why? “The existing legal issues will inevitably be resolved, so we are taking this necessary step now to minimize the possibilities of conflict and confrontation, and of disruption for the public and our students, when we are cleared to resume construction,” said Chancellor Carol Christ (The Berkeleyan, January 16, 2024). Like others in the flood of official campus public relations communications with which students, faculty and staff have been inundated since the Chancellor’s 2017 announcement of plans to build student housing on the park, this response falls short of explaining why there is such fear of “conflict and confrontation” and such strong opposition to these plans, even from students whose interests the plans are supposed to serve.

For a broader range of perspectives on what was and is going on at People’s Park, Teach-Ins have been organized by UC Berkeley students (January 24) and by community groups (February 4). Please join us for the next one. There will be ample time for Q and A. Fiat Lux!

Ironically, this event is sponsored by the Goldman School’s Center for Civility & Democratic Engagement, and is billed as a discussion of the “roles and responsibilities of the University, the City, the State, and other stakeholders regarding Campus/City relations and how best to think about, analyze, and address the impacts of future enrollment increases and campus expansions on Berkeley and other campus communities.”

On the panel are Goldman School of Public Policy Dean David Wilson, Berkeley officials Mayor Jesse Arreguin, Councilmembers Rigel Robinson and Kate Harrison, and Senator Nancy Skinner, who is being credited with the legislation that overturned the court ordered campus enrollment freeze. Moderated by Goldman School Professor Dan Lindheim.

Note from the NLG: This form is end-to-end encrypted and goes only to the NLG legal team. We can provide lawyers to advise and represent most people in misdemeanor cases for free, but only if the arrestees get in touch with us by filling out the form, emailing demonstrations@nlgsf.org or if needed, by calling the legal hotline 415-909-4NLG (4654).

Please also notify Copwatch at berkeleycopwatch@yahoo.com or (510) 548-0425, and let us know as well at info@peoplespark.org so we can be sure no one slips through the cracks.

LEGAL UPDATE: No known court dates ahead, but the legal dates on the books are that our lawyers have to get their appeal briefs in by September 6, UC has 20 days to cry about how unfair it all is, and then our lawyers have 20 days to get in our rebuttal. So we have some breathing room on the legal front but UC is UC and we have to be prepared for anything at all. Were dealing with some of the biggest climate destroyers on the planet and they just killed so many trees in the park, actually changing the climate dramatically in the park and therefore in the neighborhood. Its not like UC has a moral fiber anywhere to be found. So stay vigilant.

Other park news: The bathroom, at least one side, was liberated and has water once more. May the flush be with you.

People’s Park Gift, a huge collaborative art project in the park, Saturday, September 3, 2022

UCpocrisy – art project in collaboration with artist 233 – before and after

UC used a backhoe as a weapon of destruction in the recent massacre at People’s Park. We wrapped it up as a gift to give back to UC. Art seminar 10am, art workshop 11-3, and permanent exhibit opening at 4pm.

In the artist’s own words:

Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, exactly a month after the terrible events occured at People’s Park, the community of People’s Park is going to wrap up a special gift back to the UC Berkeley administration. We don’t want it! Spaniard artist 233 is leading an art project fruit of collective thought, sharing and work, promoted by People’s Park Council and supported by the whole community of People’s Park. The idea is to contribute through contemporary art with People’s Park’s struggle against the powerful unfair capitalist establishment in which every human being coexist.

Panel Discussion and Presentation by Peoples Park Historic District, Friday, August 27, 2021, 6–9 pm

Canessa Gallery
708 Montgomery Street, San Francisco

Last Friday two lawsuits were filed in Alameda County Superior Court against UC Berkeley and the UC Regents. Two community groups and AFSCME Local 3299 are challenging the impact of growth plans of the university. Previously another filing was done on the Berkeley City Councils violations of the Brown Act, in formulating and adopting the Citys recent secret “settlement agreement” with the University of California.

The evenings panel will discuss both legal and community organizing actions to stop implementation of UCBs Long Range Development Plan (LRDP), a plan that seeks to destroy Peoples Park and other irreplaceable neighborhood and community assets in Berkeley.

Panelists include historians, preservationists and activists – Charles Wollenberg, Lesley Emmington, Carol Denney, Joe Liesner and Harvey Smith. — Read more…

Canessa Gallery
708 Montgomery Street, San Francisco

David L. Axelrod has filed a Writ of Mandate in Alameda County Superior Court on the Berkeley City Councils violations of the Brown Act, in formulating and adopting the Citys recent secret “settlement agreement” with the University of California. In the secret agreement, the Berkeley Mayor and City Council surrendered a lawsuit it had already won that had challenged the Universitys Long Range Development Plan (LRDP), a plan that seeks to destroy Peoples Park and other irreplaceable neighborhood and community assets in Berkeley. — Read more…

The exhibit includes photographs, art work, posters and memorabilia from over 50 years of spirited community involvement in preserving the irreplaceable open space of the park.

Join us to learn more about what has been happening to the Peoples Park, its residents, and what rose the UC Berkeley administration is playing in this whole scenario. This online event would be a great opportunity for anyone who wants to learn more about this issue, has any questions, or wants to take action.

The Future of Peoples Park – Zoom Event, February 26, 2021

UC Berkeleys plan to build a 17-story high rise on Peoples Park, which would destroy the historic and cultural legacy and an irreplaceable natural environment, has brought together writers, historians, students and park activists to oppose this ill-considered project.

This Zoom event, hosted by the Peoples Park Historic District Advocacy Group, will present the historic background of the park, give details on the effort to recognize its national landmark status, and share plans for revitalizing this invaluable public open space.

The goal of this meeting is to develop strategies for taking our message to the broader Berkeley community, as well as the mayor, city council, UC Berkeley, state legislature and regents.

Presenters to include:

  • Tom Dalzell – author of The Battle for Peoples Park, Berkeley 1969
  • Steve Wasserman – Participant and Activist during 1969
  • Max Ventura – Peoples Park Council
  • Aidan Hill – Former Berkeley Mayoral Candidate/UCB Student

People’s Park and the Right to The Commons – Spring 2019 DeCal Class Syllabus

Class Facilitators: Adam Zeigler: adamziegler@pm.me
Class meetings: Tuesdays 5-6pm,  Barrows Hall, Room 166, (map) January 22 through April 30, 2019
People’s Park is internationally known for its rich history of struggle and resistance. From the Ohlone Indians to the current drive to build housing on it, the Park has raised important questions about who has a right to the land and who it should serve. This class will examine the history of the Park including the Native American period, the Mexican Cession and Gold Rush period as well as the exercise of eminent domain that turned the developed city block into first a parking lot and then a park. We will examine crucial concepts such as “user development”, open space, “Everyone Gets a Blister” and land “ownership” itself. Students will meet activists, park users and city officials who can discuss the significance of this controversial piece of land.

Mobilize and March to Campus: Hands Off Our Park: Defend People’s Park From Cops And Chainsaws
Tuesday January 22, 2019, 11:30 AM – People’s Park

This beautiful tree trio in People’s Park was tragically killed January 15, 2019.

Last week, over 150 heavily armed police officers came with guns and chainsaws to cut down our trees and trash our homes. Six people – community members and students – were violently awoken and handcuffed at 5 am, on charges of “illegal camping” – because they had put up tents and tarps as shelter from the rain. All of their belongings were seized or trashed.

Tree attack early morning in People’s Park, January 15, 2019

We reject the UC’s claim that this is about sick trees. This is about razing one of Berkeley’s few public spaces to turn it into privatized, luxury dorms. Some trees were supposedly removed because they were “too close to other trees”. Others were completely removed over health issues that are normally solved by removing a branch. The only thing “wrong” with those trees was that they stood in the way of the construction equipment the UC intends to bring in.

Over 22 trees were killed in People’s Park on December 28, 2018

They came in the dark of night, during break, when they knew most students would be away from Berkeley, to make it look like students didn’t care. Join us in the park at 11:30 for a rally, and then march to campus, to show the UC that the park belongs to the People, not militarized cops and not private corporations!

In 2018 Mayor Jesse Arreguin told the SF Chronicle: “For many decades this [People’s Park] was the third rail of politics in Berkeley, but today I think there is a desire to look at something different.”

Why the flip-flop, Mr. Mayor?

According to a 2018 UC Berkeley study: The Telegraph Avenue Business Development District gets 21.6% of its total assessment revenue from publicly owned properties. BIDs frequently engage in local and state advocacy to enact, maintain, and strengthen anti-homeless laws. BIDs spend property assessment revenue, including revenue from publicly owned properties, on anti-homeless advocacy; and the growing number of BIDs established after 1994 correlates with a sharp rise in the number of anti-homeless laws.

Anti-homeless laws benefit the TBID, while hurting the community as a whole.

“I’m hoping it will be an event to talk about, among other things in the Park, and the threat to it, and the struggle to keep it, and what it means, and why it is important. I was hoping maybe you could come and say some words since you were there and still are there and here.”
Osha Neumann <oneumann@ebclc.org>

Save People’s Park: UCB use “Housing Crisis” to bulldoze the park. City of Berkeley told UC to LIMIT ENROLLMENT. Build elsewhere in Berkeley, save our green space, Save People’s Park! If UCB gets their way, Berkeley will be covered with high-rises and hotels and the legacy of Berkeley’s historic contributions to the Free Speech, Anti War and Community Democracy reduced to a bronze plaque. Don’t let that happen! The Spirit of Democracy lives on in People’s Park. The natural beauty of Berkeley’s People’s Park must never be smothered in concrete! Organizing meetings Sundays at 1pm at the park. In solidarity with the UC workers.

Please attend! Tell people. Spread the word. Challenge this. UC must not be allowed to expand at the expense of rising rents and to displace homeless people!!! This year they admitted 2000 more students into a city that already has a huge affordable housing shortage! Are they manipulating the market just to KEEP RENTS HIGH?
